Lister read Antoine Godeau’s La Vie de l’apostre St. Paul on 12 July 1664 when in Aix-en-Provence.  The work was first published in 1647.

Godeau (1605-1672) was Bishop of Grasse. Balzac complemented Godeau as a stylist, which may by the reason for Lister’s interest in his work.  Lister had read another work by Godeau the month before.
