Lister initially read Antoine Godeau’s La Vie de l’apostre St. Paul on 12 July 1664 when in Aix-en-Provence. He noted that he read it again in February 1664/5.

Balzac complemented Godeau as a stylist, which may by the reason for Lister’s interest in his work.
