Samuel Howlett

Fellow, St. John’s College, Cambridge

Samuel Howlett, was a fellow at St. John’s College, Cambridge, with whom Lister became acquainted during his studies in Montpellier.

Lister returned home from Paris with Howlett. Howlett matriculated at St John’s in 1660, getting his B.A. in 1664, his M.A. in 1667, and subsequently becoming a fellow. Ray also mentioned dining with Howlett in Cambridge in a letter to Lister of 28 June 1671. Howlett’s fellowship ceased in 1671, most likely due to his death. Howlett left eighty volumes to St John’s in Italian, French, Spanish and German.
