Lister reached London on 20 August 1663 and then sailed for Rye, reaching the port in six days. The ship was driven back from its channel crossing by storms three days later, and he was stuck in Weymouth for three weeks, making observations of Chesil Beach.   Finally on 5 and then 8 September, the ship attempted to leave Weymouth, was turned back due to the weather, sailing ‘with great hazard of our lives’. Lister then boarded the frigate Dove for St Malo on the nineteenth of September 1663.
