Pézenas

France (Wikipedia)

Mentions in Pocketbook: 15 January 1664.

Lister passed through Pézenas on 15 January 1664, arriving in Montpellier the next day.  He did not note anything else about the settlement in his notebook.

Pézenas is most famous for having its old medieval quarter that has survived almost intact. Slightly more than a decade before Lister’s visit to Pézenas, a young Molière performed his plays there (1650 to 1653) with his theatre group l’Illustre Théâtre.  The town inspired some of Molière’s most famous works, including ‘The Comtess d’Escarbagnas’ and ‘Dom Juan, ou le festin de Pierre.’
