Jacques de Callières, Paris, 1658 (Google Books, 1663)
De Callières (d. 1697) was a maréchal des batailles in the King’s army and governor of Cherbourg from 1644 to 1662. He was also the author of several military histories, as well as this conduct book, which Lister read in January/February 1665/6 (The Fortune of people of quality and private gentlemen, teaching the art of living at court according to the maxims of politics and morality).
The work was dedicated to Henri II d’Orléans, duc de Longueville (1595 – 1663), a noted rebel in the Fronde, and governor of Picardy, and then of Normandy.
